Barkley Shares Passion for Reading with Students
June 04, 2018
For over two decades, Cindy Barkley has enjoyed volunteering as a guest reader for Lana Gilliam’s Kindergarten class at Kirbyville Elementary. Each month, Barkley would visit and read stories that offer messages that promote character traits including perseverance, kindness, humility etc. and then Barkley would discuss how the students can apply these great messages to their daily lives.
“21 years ago I made a commitment to Lana Gilliam – one that allowed me to visit her classroom every month to read to her students and share moments that are so special to me,” said Cindy Barkley, VP/ Controller, Branson Bank. “My favorite books to read are by Dr. Seuss and I have certainly enjoyed seeing the students’ enthusiasm and love for reading grow.”
This May, Mrs. Gilliam retired after 34 years of teaching, with 23 of those most recent years in the Kirbyville School District. Previously, Gilliam taught in the Joplin, Seneca, Hollister, and Branson districts before making Kirbyville her home. Barkley as well as the hundreds of students that Gilliam has impacted during her tenure at Kirbyville are proud of their loving and devoted teacher, wishing her the best in her retirement.
